Surgeons in Vinnytsia saved a patient with a complex pancreatic tumor
Doctors at the M. I. Pirogov Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital saved the life of a 57-year-old man with a severe form of cancer. Surgeons removed a tumor from the pancreas and repaired the affected major blood vessels.
“Yaroslav, 57, was admitted to the hospital with a severe form of cancer. The pancreatic tumor was not only aggressive but also anatomically extremely complex: the disease had spread to the major blood vessels responsible for supplying blood to the liver and intestines. Surgical treatment in such a situation was at the very limit of what was possible, since with such extensive tumor spread, the condition is generally considered unresectable,” the statement reads.
It is noted that after preoperative chemotherapy and a detailed analysis, the hospital’s multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with the extremely complex procedure.
“The patient underwent a total spleno-preserving duodenopancreatectomy with resection of the affected major arteries and veins: the celiac trunk, hepatic arteries, superior mesenteric artery, portal vein, and superior mesenteric vein, followed by their complex reconstruction. During a single operation, the surgeons not only radically removed the pancreas along with the tumor but also reconstructed the critically important blood supply pathways using techniques employed in liver and intestinal transplantation,” the statement adds.
The man has now been discharged home.
