Driver Sentenced for Fatal Car Accident Involving a 15-Year-Old Girl

A court found a 23-year-old resident of the Zhytomyr region guilty of causing a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl. The Khmilnytskyi District Prosecutor’s Office represented the prosecution in the case.

By a verdict of the Koziatyn City and District Court dated July 20,2026, the man was convicted under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, with a 10-year ban on driving. This is the maximum penalty provided for under the article.

The tragic traffic accident occurred on the night of September 24, 2024, near Hlukhovets in the Khmilnytskyi District. The defendant, while under the influence of alcohol, was driving a VAZ 21053 despite having had his driver’s license revoked.

At a railroad crossing on the Koziatyn 2–Berdychev line, he ignored the railroad system’s light and sound signals and collided with a moving freight train.

As a result of the collision, a minor passenger in the car died at the scene. The driver sustained bodily injuries.

Prosecutors demonstrated the severity of the crime’s consequences in court. At the same time, the defendant did not admit guilt, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General

Earlier in Zakarpattia, three men attempted to bribe border guards to leave the country.

As a reminder, preparations are nearing completion in Zakarpattia for the launch of the new “Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmatiei” international border crossing on the Ukrainian-Romanian border.

Throughout June, Ukrainian border guards detained more than a thousand people who were attempting to illegally cross the state border or were in the border zone without the proper permits.
