A former mayor of a city in Zakarpattia, who is suspected of embezzlement, was extradited from Romania
The former mayor of a city in Zakarpattia was extradited from Romania to Ukraine. According to police, he is suspected of embezzling public funds during the construction of a rehabilitation and health center.
In July 2023, police notified the official of the charges in absentia, as he had left on a business trip abroad and did not return. He is charged with committing criminal offenses under Part 4 of Article 191 (misappropriation of another’s property through abuse of official position by a public official, committed by a group of persons acting in concert) and Part 1 of Article 366 (issuance by a public official of a knowingly false official document) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Subsequently, an international arrest warrant for the suspect was issued through Interpol, and in late 2025, he was detained in the Czech Republic and barred from leaving the country. However, he traveled to Romania, where he was also detained by the police.
On September 10, the suspect was handed over to Ukrainian authorities at the “Porubne” international border crossing (Chernivtsi–Siret). Based on a court order, he was detained and placed in pretrial detention with the option to post bail in the amount of 332,800 hryvnias.
