Zelenskyy Discussed Peace Initiatives and Support for Ukraine with the Pope’s Envoy
On July 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. The two sides discussed support for Ukraine, the Church’s activities, peace initiatives, and the country’s European integration.
Zelenskyy thanked Pope Leo XIV and the Holy See for their support of Ukraine. He noted that the Vatican delegation was in Kyiv during the latest massive Russian attack.
The President emphasized that Russia continues its shelling, so international efforts to achieve peace remain particularly important. According to him, one possible step could be a meeting at the leadership level.
“Russia does not want to stop these attacks, but that is precisely why it is so important to continue working for peace. And one format that could contribute to this is a summit between the leaders. I thank the Vatican for its willingness to host it and to continue making efforts to ensure that such a meeting can take place,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
During the talks, the parties also discussed the Church’s activities in Ukraine. The head of state noted the role of the Ukrainian clergy, which supports the military and civilians and helps people during wartime.
The parties paid special attention to Ukraine’s European integration. Zelenskyy noted that the Vatican supports the country’s European choice and recognizes its efforts toward full membership in the European Union.
The President also thanked the Pope and the Holy See for their constant prayers and support for the Ukrainian people.
