Doctors in Lviv set a record: after her water broke, the pregnancy was successfully maintained for another 97 days
Doctors were able to extend the pregnancy of a 28-year-old patient by another 97 days after her water broke. As a result, the baby’s organs had time to develop sufficiently, and the boy was born in satisfactory condition and did not require intensive care.
The case set a record for the maternity ward at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv. The doctors’ previous best result was 83 days.
This was the patient’s second pregnancy. Her first son was delivered via a scheduled cesarean section. This time, at 22 weeks of pregnancy, the woman’s amniotic fluid suddenly broke. At such an early stage, the baby is still very tiny and vulnerable, and without the protective fluid, there is a high risk of infection.
The woman was hospitalized. To save the baby, doctors carefully monitored her test results daily and administered preventive treatment, while the expectant mother had to adhere to strict bed rest for months and barely got out of bed. Thanks to the combined efforts of the medical team and the woman, the pregnancy was successfully extended to the 36th week.
“This case required the utmost attention from the entire team. The main goal was to prevent infection and buy time so that the baby’s organs could develop fully. We moved forward step by step,” says obstetrician-gynecologist Ihor Fedashko.
The boy was born weighing 2,490 g and measuring 49 cm in length. Despite a scar on the uterus from her first delivery, the baby was born vaginally in satisfactory condition and did not even require resuscitation. He was named Nazar. He is now with his family.
