Zelenskyy discussed with Starmer the tightening of sanctions against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. During the talks, the leaders agreed on a joint diplomatic strategy and discussed the supply of defensive weapons to the Ukrainian army.

The parties devoted significant attention to strengthening the role of European countries in the process of resolving the war unleashed by Russia. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Europe needs its own strong voice, a clear position, and a substantial contribution to all international diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing about a just peace. The leaders coordinated in detail the next steps ahead of planned international meetings and high-level negotiations.

Separately, the President of Ukraine expressed his deep gratitude to the British Prime Minister for the package of economic restrictions recently introduced by London, which blocked Russian cryptocurrency schemes designed to circumvent sanctions. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical importance of continuously increasing all forms of financial and political pressure on the aggressor country, noted the unwavering and strong support from the United Kingdom, and reaffirmed the shared commitment to expanding defense and diplomatic cooperation.

This was reported in a Telegram post by the head of state.

On May 26, the United Kingdom announced a new package of sanctions against entities that help Russia circumvent international restrictions, particularly through cryptocurrency and shadow financial schemes.

Despite the sanctions, Russia’s shadow fleet continues to pass unhindered through British waters.
