Zelenskyy announced the establishment of a new Naval Academy in Odesa

On the eve of Ukrainian Navy Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the decision to establish a new Naval Academy in Odesa. According to the head of state, this step is intended to strengthen the training of future officers and contribute to the further development of the Ukrainian Navy.

“And today, on the occasion of this year’s Ukrainian Navy Day, and as a sign of respect and gratitude to our Navy—for the development of our Ukrainian Navy and for the development of our Odesa—I have made the decision to establish a strong new Naval Academy here in Odesa,” the president wrote.— and for the development of our city of Odesa — to establish a strong new Naval Academy here in Odesa,” the president wrote.

It should be noted that until now, Ukraine has not had a Naval Academy. Until 2014, the P. S. Nakhimov Naval Academy operated in Sevastopol, Crimea, but after the Russian occupation of the peninsula, some of the academy’s cadets and faculty moved to Odesa.

That same year, a Naval Forces faculty was established there as part of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy,” and in 2016, it was transformed into the Naval Forces Institute of the same university.

Officers for service in the Ukrainian Navy had been trained previously, but at a civilian educational institution.

“I know that our Navy has this need, that we have the necessary capacity, and, most importantly, that our cadets and our youth have the desire to serve Ukraine and defend Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

The president also announced the creation of a new brigade of mine-countermeasure ships, which will assist partners in “ensuring security” as needed.

He announced this on social media.

From “divvying up” and neglect to naval drones: the paradoxical history of the Ukrainian Navy.

In the Odesa region, a critical infrastructure facility was damaged by a drone attack.

In the Kyiv region, efforts are underway to extinguish a large-scale fire at an industrial facility that broke out as a result of a nighttime attack by Russian drones. Units of the State Emergency Service are involved in the firefighting efforts, and cleanup operations are ongoing.

On the night of June 4, Russian troops carried out a massive air attack using a ballistic missile and 293 drones of various types. Ukraine’s air defense forces destroyed or intercepted 264 aerial targets.
