On the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia continues the crimes against Ukraine that it began with the occupation of Crimea, and emphasized the importance of unity in the struggle.
He announced this on Telegram.
“Today we remember and honor the memory of all victims of one of the most brutal crimes of the Soviet regime—the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people. A deportation that constituted an act of blatant genocide against the Crimean Tatar people,” the president noted.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the 1944 deportation was an attempt to destroy an entire people, when hundreds of thousands of people were forcibly removed from their homes, and a significant portion perished en route or in exile.
According to the head of state, Russia did not stop at the crimes of the past and launched a new war against Ukraine from Crimea, once again attempting to deprive Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians of their homes.
“We are defending ourselves against this, and as long as we stand together and help one another, we will certainly prevail,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
Every year on May 18, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, carried out by the Soviet totalitarian regime in 1944. Over 190,000 people were forcibly deported from Crimea in just a few days.
In St. Petersburg, police detained three leaders of the Crimean Tatar children’s dance ensemble “Nefes” from occupied Crimea after they were photographed with a Crimean Tatar flag.
The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation reported that it had allegedly foiled an assassination attempt against the leadership of Roskomnadzor, which, according to their version, was being prepared with the involvement of Ukrainian special services.
