Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s statement about “bargaining over a few square kilometers,” emphasizing that Vance is not involved in the negotiations.

The head of state made this remark during a briefing.

“With all due respect, the Vice President is not participating in the negotiations between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia… If he were, he would have a deeper understanding of what Ukrainian territory is,” Zelenskyy noted.

The president emphasized that Russia has not abandoned its plans to occupy Ukrainian territories and views the capture of the east as a springboard for a further offensive.

“Every square meter of our land is Ukrainian land,” he emphasized.

Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine currently lacks sufficient security guarantees to discuss any territorial compromises.

“For now, we simply do not have the security guarantees to discuss other steps,” the president added.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that Washington is disappointed with European leaders. According to him, they are not showing sufficient interest in finding ways to end the war in Ukraine.

During a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest on April 7, 2026, the U.S. Vice President made remarks regarding attempts by certain representatives of the Ukrainian government to influence foreign electoral processes. He noted that Washington is aware of the existence of such groups, calling it part of the price of cooperation with foreign partners.
