Zelenskyy honored the energy worker who saved the Kurakhiv Thermal Power Plant

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the annual “National Legend of Ukraine” award to military personnel and civilians who have made significant contributions to the defense and strengthening of the state. Among this year’s recipients is Anatoliy Borichevskyi, director of DTEK’s Prydniprovska Thermal Power Plant.

The energy executive has 30 years of experience in the industry. He previously headed the Kurakhiv Thermal Power Plant, and during active hostilities, he organized the evacuation of the facility and its employees.

“National Legend of Ukraine”: An Award for Energy Professionals

The awards ceremony was attended by the president and First Lady Olena Zelenska. The award was presented to military personnel, medical workers, energy professionals, artists, athletes, journalists, and other Ukrainians and foreigners who have made significant contributions to supporting and defending Ukraine.

Among the honorees was Anatoliy Borichevskyi, director of DTEK’s Prydniprovska Thermal Power Plant, who has worked in the energy sector for over 30 years.

"This award honors energy workers who repair damaged equipment every day, bring power units online, and keep the lights on for the country. It honors the repairmen, miners, and machine builders on whom the power grid depends. “I believe that today these people are national legends of Ukraine,” said Borichevsky.

According to him, anyone who stays at their post and does their job despite shelling and danger is a national legend.

“That is why I accept this award on behalf of our entire team,” added the director of the Prydniprovska Thermal Power Plant.

Repairs Under Shelling and the Evacuation of the Kurakhiv Thermal Power Plant

DTEK emphasized that Anatoliy Borichevsky’s experience and work took on special significance during the full-scale war, when he headed the Kurakhiv Thermal Power Plant—one of the thermal power plants located closest to the front lines.

It was constantly subjected to Russian shelling, destruction, and shutdowns. Despite this, the power plant staff repaired the damaged equipment and brought the plant back online.

When it became impossible to save the plant due to the advancing front lines, under Borychevsky’s leadership, the staff carried out an unprecedented operation to evacuate its equipment.

Under the threat of shelling and without rail access, specialists dismantled critically important components weighing tens of metric tons and transported them by truck to speed up the restoration of other power plants.

This was reported with reference to a statement from DTEK.
