Zelenskyy Changed Tactics at His Meeting with Trump — The Times
During his meeting with Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a different approach than in previous interactions. According to The Times, the Ukrainian leader tried his hardest to convince the U.S. president to support Ukraine in the war against Russia.
The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, which took place on July 28 at the White House, marked another significant milestone in relations between Kyiv and Washington.
According to insiders, the Ukrainian leader decided to go all in and adopted a new strategy for his dialogue with his American counterpart.
First and foremost, Zelenskyy sought to convince Trump that Ukraine and the U.S. share a common enemy—Russia.
In this way, he sought to shift the White House leader from the role of mediator in this war to that of a full-fledged ally.
In particular, the Ukrainian president told his American counterpart that it was Russia that was helping Iran direct weapons at American troops in the Middle East.
“Well, we’ll find out if that’s true. I’ll ask Putin about it. It didn’t have much of an impact, because we wiped them out completely. Venezuela had all Russian equipment. And how did that work out?” Trump responded.
According to insiders, the U.S. president is favorably disposed toward Zelenskyy primarily because Ukraine is delivering increasingly devastating blows to Russia and is doing so with real success.
“Clearly, Zelenskyy has some trump cards that, as Trump thought last February, he didn’t have,” said former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst.
