Zelensky met with a young European chess champion
Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with 17-year-old Ukrainian chess player Roman Degtyaryov, who became European champion. The athlete had a starting rating of only 126 among nearly 500 participants in the continental championship, but he pulled off a sensational victory.
“I met with Roman Degtyarev—a 17-year-old chess player from Kharkiv. He became the first person in history to win the European Championship without the title of grandmaster. I presented Roman with the ‘Future of Ukraine’ award. We talked about his journey, training, and plans. He has been playing chess since the age of five and has already achieved major victories both in Ukraine and internationally. Congratulations on this significant victory. Thank you for representing Ukraine on the international stage at such a high level. We are proud of you, Roman, and of all our people,” Zelenskyy noted.
