Journalists compared Mudra’s statements on the recordings and in court
Iryna Mudra, former deputy head of the Office of the President, stated in court that the conversations recorded by NABU were ordinary private conversations. Journalists from “Slidstvo.Info,” together with Transparency International Ukraine, compared her words on the recordings with how she explained them during the hearing.
Iryna Mudra, who previously served as deputy head of the Office of the President, was remanded in custody in connection with a case involving her alleged participation in a criminal organization. Investigators believe that this group may have been planning a hostile takeover of two companies and a building in central Kyiv. The property in question has a total value of hundreds of millions of hryvnias. On August 25, the court ordered Mudra to be held in custody as a preventive measure. At the same time, the court allowed for bail in the amount of 20 million hryvnias.
One of the key pieces of evidence in the case is recordings of conversations made by NABU detectives. According to journalists, in these recordings, Mudra discusses various issues that may be related to the case. In court, she offered a different explanation for her remarks. Specifically, Mudra described the conversations on the recordings as ordinary private conversations. “These are ordinary private, so-called ‘kitchen conversations,’” she stated during the court hearing.
Journalists from “Slidstvo.Info” decided to compare these explanations with what is actually heard on the NABU recordings. Transparency International Ukraine also participated in the analysis. In their report, the journalists presented selected excerpts from the recordings alongside Mudra’s explanations of them. In this way, they compared two versions of the same conversations—what was captured on the recordings and how the suspect interpreted those words in court.
According to the investigation, Mudra may have been a member of a criminal organization that planned to illegally seize property. To do so, law enforcement officials say, the group may have used forged documents and court rulings. The case involves two companies and a building in central Kyiv. According to the case file, their total value amounts to hundreds of millions of hryvnias.
At the same time, the final conclusions regarding Mudra’s guilt must be made by the court. She currently has the status of a suspect, and the circumstances presented by the investigation still need to be verified during further proceedings. The story gained additional publicity following the publication of NABU’s recordings. The name “Kyrylo Oleksiyovych” is also mentioned in them. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, commented on these references, stating that it is up to the court to determine exactly who appears in the recordings.
Thus, there are currently two opposing views on the recordings in this case: the investigation considers them part of the body of evidence, while Mudra, in court, calls the conversations private and denies that they can be interpreted as evidence of criminal activity. As of August 27, the bail set by the court at 20 million hryvnias for Iryna Mudra, the former deputy head of the Office of the President, has not yet been posted.
