Day of Remembrance for Children Who Died as a Result of Russia’s Armed Aggression Against Ukraine

Day of Remembrance for Children Who Died as a Result of Russia’s Armed Aggression Against Ukraine

June 4 marks the Day of Remembrance for Children Who Died as a Result of the Russian Federation’s Armed Aggression Against Ukraine. It is one of the most poignant dates on the Ukrainian calendar, as it is dedicated to the children whose lives were taken by the war.

On this day, Ukrainians remember the youngest victims of the Russian aggression that has been ongoing since 2014. This is not a holiday or a commemorative date for the sake of formality. It is a day of mourning, remembrance, and a reminder of the terrible price Ukraine is paying for its freedom.

The Day of Remembrance for Children Who Died as a Result of the Russian Federation’s Armed Aggression Against Ukraine was officially established by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on June 1, 2021. Members of Parliament adopted the corresponding Resolution No. 5343 on the eve of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, which the United Nations observes annually on June 4.

That is why the Ukrainian commemorative date also falls on June 4. Parliament emphasized at the time that Ukraine must pay special tribute to the children who died as a result of Russian aggression. After all, there have been far too many such tragedies over the years of war. With the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the significance of this date has become even more painful and symbolic for the country.

Why June 4 was chosen

The date has a dual significance. First, it is linked to the UN’s international initiative on the protection of children during wars and conflicts. Second, it allows us to tell the world about Ukrainian children who have become victims of the war.

Every year on June 4, the international community reminds the world of children’s rights and the need to protect them. On this day, Ukraine also remembers the specific children whose lives were taken by the war. For many Ukrainians, this date has become a symbol of all the young lives that never had the chance to fulfill their dreams.

Why is this day so important

War always hits the weakest hardest. Children do not participate in combat, do not make political decisions, and are not responsible for adult conflicts. Yet they are often the most vulnerable victims of war. Russian aggression has changed the lives of millions of Ukrainian children.

Thousands were forced to leave their homes. Hundreds lost their parents. Many children were injured, survived occupation or deportation, or witnessed horrific events. Unfortunately, there are also those who will never return home. It is them we remember on June 4.

How Ukraine honors the memory of children

Commemorative events are held in various cities across the country on this day. People bring flowers and toys to memorials and commemorative sites. Memorial services and prayers are held in churches. Often, remembrance events are organized featuring children’s toys, paper angels, bells, or white balloons.

Small bells have become a special symbol in recent years. They are hung on trees, memorials, or special installations. When the bells ring in the wind, it reminds us of children’s voices that will never be heard again. Schools and educational institutions hold remembrance classes and themed events. Also, on this day in Ukraine, moments of silence are often observed in honor of the children who died.

Symbols of this Day

Over the few years since the observance began, several symbols of remembrance have emerged. One of the most well-known is white angels. They symbolize the children who fell victim to the war. White flowers, memorial candles, and children’s toys are also used. Bells have become a distinct symbol, appearing after a rally near St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. Since then, they can be seen in many cities across the country. Another common image is an empty children’s swing. It serves as a reminder of a childhood cut short by war.
