The Bank of Tajikistan closed the account of a Russian military correspondent due to Ukrainian sanctions
The International Bank of Tajikistan has closed the bank account of Russian “z-blogger” and propagandist Roman Saponkov. The “war correspondent” himself reported this, noting that the reason for this move was the sanctions imposed by Ukraine.
Ukraine added Saponkov to its sanctions list in January 2023 for his active participation in the Russian propaganda campaign, his support for the full-scale invasion, and his provision of information to support military operations in the occupied territories.
Tajikistan’s banking system has previously faced the consequences of international restrictions. In particular, in late 2025, several major credit institutions in the republic, including Dushanbe City Bank, “Spitamen,” and Kommerzbank, were hit by European Union sanctions. Against the backdrop of European sanctions, a number of Tajik banks have already begun restricting online transfers to cards issued by Russian financial institutions and tightening customer verification procedures to avoid secondary sanctions.
