British companies will be able to apply for access to Avengers AI Labs — Defense News

The UK Ministry of Defence has entered into a partnership with the Ukrainian platform Avengers AI Labs, created to train artificial intelligence for combat drones. This is the first time Ukraine has granted a foreign state access to machine-learning infrastructure based on war data, Defense News reports.

Data from the DELTA system

According to Ukrainian officials, Avengers AI Labs contains an annotated dataset of more than 5 million battlefield frames, as well as sensor data on millions of detected objects. These include tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry, Shahed drones and reconnaissance UAVs.

The data are primarily generated on the basis of the DELTA battle management system. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence said the information is anonymized and transferred with a delay so as not to endanger service members who continue to take part in combat operations.

Proposals from companies

The UK Ministry of Defence has invited up to 12 companies to submit proposals on using the platform. Priority will be given to developments capable of operating fully under degraded communications or without satellite navigation.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, British companies will work in a secure environment without the ability to download the underlying dataset. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said that access to real battlefield data would help British companies develop defence innovations and strengthen Ukraine.
