The Kuibyshev Oil Refinery in Russia has halted operations following an attack by Ukrainian drones – Reuters
The Russian Kuibyshev Oil Refinery, owned by the state-run company Rosneft, completely suspended oil refining operations on June 10 following a successful drone attack. The precision strike triggered massive fires at the facility, which disabled key processing equipment.
Operations at both crude oil primary distillation units, each capable of processing approximately 10,000 tons (73,000 barrels) of feedstock per day, are currently completely halted due to damage.
The Kuibyshev Refinery is part of Rosneft’s large Samara oil refining hub, which also includes production facilities in Novokuibyshevsk and Syzran. The attack on this facility has effectively paralyzed the entire regional oil refining complex, as neighboring plants are also in critical condition. The Syzran refinery completely halted its production cycle on May 21 following a similar drone strike and remains inactive to this day, while the Novokuybyshevsk plant has been able to operate only at significantly reduced capacity since April 18.
The economic consequences for the aggressor country’s fuel sector are quite significant, as the disabled industrial infrastructure supplied substantial volumes to the domestic market and to the occupying forces. In 2024, the Kuibyshev Refinery processed a total of 4.7 million tons of crude oil, producing a significant amount of petroleum products daily. Its annual fuel output amounted to approximately 0.8 million tons of motor gasoline, 1.4 million tons of diesel fuel, and 1.3 million tons of heavy fuel oil, which is now creating a serious shortage in the affected regions of the Russian Federation and occupied Crimea.
