Ukraine has significantly improved the effectiveness of its air defense and is currently shooting down about 90% of enemy drones and nearly 80% of cruise missiles.
This was reported with reference to a post by Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
According to him, even despite the difficult winter campaign, during which Russia significantly increased the intensity of its attacks and nearly doubled the number of strikes, Ukraine’s air defense remains highly effective.
Fedorov also noted that one of the main challenges for the air defense system remains the constant adaptation of Russian weapons and changes in attack tactics, which requires further strengthening of technological solutions in the field of air defense.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv and saw how Ukraine is defending its skies.
Fedorov showed Pistorius the location of a "small" air defense unit and an energy facility in Kyiv that had been damaged by Russian attacks.
The German defense minister was also shown:
measures to counter "Shahed"-type drones;
mobile fire teams;
technologies for destroying enemy targets.
According to Fedorov, last winter was one of the hardest for Ukraine.
"Russia has nearly doubled the number of attacks. In just a few months, the enemy launched over 1,000 ballistic and cruise missiles and 27,000 Shahed-type drones. The main target is Ukraine’s energy sector and large-scale blackouts during periods of freezing temperatures down to -20°C," the minister stated.
Fedorov named Germany as one of the key leaders in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
Berlin supplied missiles for the "Patriot" system, funded the PURL mechanism, and launched an initiative for the urgent transfer of missiles from European stockpiles during the most critical winter period.
"Each of these missiles saved lives and helped protect the Ukrainian power grid," Fedorov emphasized.
Currently, Ukraine intercepts about 90% of enemy drones and nearly 80% of cruise missiles.
Ballistic missiles remain the most difficult challenge. But together with Germany, Ukraine is working to solve this problem—through additional Patriot missiles, the PURL mechanism, and the creation of its own European anti-ballistic capability.
Fedorov presented Pistorius with a medal from the minefields and an “Azovstal” bracelet.
In Kyiv, Pistorius announced a strategic partnership between Ukraine and Germany.
