The Main Intelligence Directorate Revealed Details of an Unusual Operation to Defend Kyiv

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) demonstrated an operation to defend the capital, during which Katran unmanned platforms were used to carry interceptor drones and radar equipment.

The operation was conducted in September by the GUR’s FERRATA active operations unit—which includes the “Black Sea Legion” naval detachment—in conjunction with the Ukrainian Air Force and other components of the Security and Defense Forces.

The Katran unmanned platforms became an unusual element of the air defense system. They were used as carriers for interceptor drones and radar reconnaissance equipment.

In other words, some of the assets used to detect and intercept aerial targets operated not from traditional ground positions, but from unmanned platforms on the water.

At the same time, FERRATA operators practiced coordinating this unmanned component with F-16 crews.

The Main Intelligence Directorate explains that all of this was part of a multi-tiered, layered air defense system: various assets operated as a unified system to detect and destroy enemy targets both in the air and on the water.

The released footage shows the FERRATA command post in action during this operation and the coordination of various defense components.

The video was released by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

As a reminder, during another air raid alert in Kyiv on September 10 at around 10:30 a.m., an explosion was heard in the Okruzhnaya Road area. Afterward, videos began appearing on social media from the site of the alleged crash of a Russian drone.

Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops carried out 989 strikes on 53 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region. The occupiers carried out the vast majority of the attacks using drones—in 24 hours, the Russians launched 790 UAVs at the region.
