Yastremska says her family’s apartment in Odesa was destroyed
Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska said that her family’s apartment was destroyed during a Russian air attack in Odesa, Ukraine. This was reported by BBC News. The athlete posted on social media a photo of a multi-storey residential building engulfed in flames.
The tennis player’s statement
Yastremska claims that the apartment sustained a direct hit from a Russian Kalibr cruise missile. In another photo, she showed an orange Roland Garros towel which, she said, remained hanging amid the ruins.
The tennis player called this symbolic: a part of the tennis world survived the strike, while her home did not. In an Instagram post, she also addressed the Women’s Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation, urging them to look at the consequences of the attack through Ukrainians’ eyes.

Consequences of the attack
Odesa regional head Oleh Kiper reported that 37 people, including an infant, were injured as a result of a missile-and-drone attack on Odesa and neighbouring Chornomorsk on Friday evening. Two more people were considered missing.
Dayana Yastremska is 26 years old. In 2024, she reached the Australian Open semi-finals and is currently ranked 113th in the singles world rankings. At this year’s US Open in New York, she ended her run in the first round.
