ISW has revealed whether one of the Oreshnik missiles actually fell in the Donetsk region

Russia likely launched two "Oreshnik" medium-range ballistic missiles on the night of May 24, but one of them may have malfunctioned. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). According to analysts, the missile may have malfunctioned and crashed in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, which could indicate technical issues with Russian missile systems.

As noted by the ISW, Ukrainian OSINT sources reported on May 25 about a video that may show the launch of a second “Oreshnik” missile during an attack on the night of May 24.

The footage allegedly shows six submunitions falling. One Ukrainian OSINT source speculated that the missile may have struck Russian positions near the occupied towns of Avdiivka or Yasynuvata—approximately 40 kilometers from the front line.

If this data is confirmed, it would mean that one in four “Oreshnik” missiles used by the Russian army in the war against Ukraine was rendered inoperable.

According to estimates by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s news agency “ArmyInform,” Russia’s combined strike on May 23–24 cost about $361 million, of which approximately $50 million was spent on a single “Oreshnik” missile.

If the launch of a second missile is confirmed, the total cost of the attack will rise to approximately $411 million.

On the night of May 24, 2026, during a massive combined attack on Kyiv, Russian occupiers struck the territory of the “Ancient Kyiv” State Historical and Architectural Reserve. As a result of the shelling, architectural landmarks suffered serious damage, and the National Museum “Chernobyl” in Podil was almost completely destroyed.

The building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in Kyiv was damaged as a result of a Russian missile and drone strike on May 24

In Kyiv, as a result of a massive combined attack by the Russian Federation, the number of casualties rose to at least 62 people, including two children

As a result of the massive nighttime attack on Kyiv, all districts of the capital were affected, with the most severe damage recorded in the Lukyanivka district.
