Kremlin pushes narrative about alleged secret torture sites for Russians in Ukraine
Kremlin propagandists have once again raised claims about the supposed existence of secret prisons in Ukraine, where Russian prisoners of war are allegedly tortured.
Russian Ambassador Rodion Miroshnik stated in an interview that such “secret” sites exist and that cruel methods, including “electric chairs,” are used.
These narratives have been actively promoted by Russian propaganda since 2014, but no evidence has been provided to support their veracity.
The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasizes that such statements aim to discredit Ukraine and reduce Russia’s accountability for its war crimes. Meanwhile, Ukraine adheres to international humanitarian law regarding prisoners of war, and international organizations have access to monitor their conditions.
In contrast, numerous documented cases of mistreatment of Ukrainian soldiers indicate violations committed by Russia.
Russian propaganda media are also again spreading claims about the alleged potential capture of Odesa and Kharkiv. This time, they actively cite American professor John Mearsheimer, presenting his words as “proof” of Ukraine’s weakness. Such statements are used to convince audiences that Ukraine allegedly cannot hold its territory without Western support.
