Lavrov called for an end to arms shipments to Ukraine during a meeting with Rubio
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia—the aggressor state—stated during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 23 that Moscow was allegedly ready for negotiations and called for an end to arms supplies to Ukraine.
According to “Ukrainska Pravda,” citing the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ministry stated that Lavrov and Rubio discussed a wide range of bilateral and international issues as part of the ongoing high-level dialogue. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov also briefed Rubio on the “real” state of affairs in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The Russian ministry stated that Lavrov called “further arms supplies” to Ukraine “unacceptable.” It also claims that he reaffirmed the Russian side’s readiness for a political and diplomatic settlement and its commitment to the proposals that, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the U.S. side put forward during the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Anchorage.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement, Lavrov and Rubio also discussed “normalizing the operating conditions” for the diplomatic missions of Russia and the United States. The Russian side reported an agreement to continue contacts between the foreign ministries, particularly within the framework of the two countries’ work in international organizations. The day before, Rubio had stated that he planned to discuss the Russian-Ukrainian war with Lavrov.
In June, Rubio stated that no agreements regarding Ukraine were reached during last year’s summit in Anchorage between Trump and Putin. He made this statement after Lavrov and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov accused the U.S. of betraying the so-called “spirit of Anchorage.”
