“I was tortured for about a month”: An Azov fighter recounts his time in Russian captivity

Nazarii Krasovskyi, a Ukrainian soldier with the Azov unit who goes by the call sign “Altar,” spoke about the torture he endured while in Russian captivity.

He spoke about this in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

According to the soldier, the torture lasted about a month and was systematic.

“They tortured me for about a month, constantly,” Krasovsky said.

He noted that after brutal beatings, he was unable to walk for a long time, and until his release, he was effectively bedridden for over two years.

The soldier said that the torture methods included simulated drowning, electric shocks, beatings, a bag over the head, and burning.

According to Krasovsky, his comrades and thoughts of his family helped him survive his captivity.

The soldier is currently undergoing rehabilitation following his release.

Ukraine and Russia carried out a prisoner-of-war exchange on a 205-for-205 basis, according to preliminary data from reports by the Russian side and Telegram channels. Official details regarding the location, time, and lists of participants are currently being clarified.

Ukraine has managed to repatriate more than 9,000 of its citizens from Russian captivity, including both military personnel and hundreds of civilians. This was reported by Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who emphasized that efforts to bring people home are ongoing.
