A resident of the Kharkiv region will stand trial for serving in the Russian military
On August 21, an indictment was filed in court against a 25-year-old resident of the Kupiansk district who, after fleeing to Russia, signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense. According to the investigation, the man served in the Russian Federation’s railway troops, which provide logistical routes for Russian forces; he faces life imprisonment.
According to the investigation, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the village of Kolodyazne, one of its residents fled to Belgorod along with Russian soldiers.
In late February 2025, he arrived at a military recruitment center in St. Petersburg and signed a one-year contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The man was assigned to military unit 33149, which is part of the Russian Armed Forces’ Railway Troops.
The prosecutor’s office noted that this unit restores and maintains the logistics routes that Russian troops use to conduct combat operations in the Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv regions.
A prosecutor from the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office approved and forwarded to the court an indictment under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—treason committed under martial law.
The defendant is wanted, so the Osnovyansky District Court of Kharkiv will hear the case in absentia.
If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment.
The pretrial investigation and operational support were conducted by officers of the SBU Directorate in Kharkiv Oblast.
This was reported by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
