Mobilization of men with serious illnesses: the case of a brain tumor and schizophrenia
A man with a brain tumor was mobilized and deemed fit for service at a medical commission, according to Mykhailova, head of the ULF medical service. She also reported that recently people with severe conditions such as schizophrenia, urgent need for hip replacement, congenital deafness, active tuberculosis, and alcohol-related delirium have been sent to the army.
Mykhailova noted that military commissions warn that if they do not now conscript these categories of “unfit” men, they may not get any recruits at all for the brigades later. This situation raises concerns about the quality of personnel and the adherence to medical standards in the mobilization process.
Going forward, this issue may worsen, as mobilizing individuals with serious illnesses creates significant challenges for military medical support and affects the combat readiness of units.
