Ukraine's Foreign Ministry called for tougher sanctions following Russia's attack on a tanker near Romania
Andriy Sibiga, Ukraine’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, called on the international community to intensify sanctions pressure on Russia following the attack on the tanker Gas Lisbon off the coast of Romania, which was en route to Ukraine.
According to Sibiga, Russian aggression poses a threat not only to Ukraine but also to freedom of navigation and security in the Black Sea. He emphasized that the deliberate attack on the liquefied natural gas tanker is yet another manifestation of Russian terror.
The minister noted that civilian crew members were injured as a result of the attack. He said the incident jeopardized the safety of maritime navigation and once again demonstrated the Kremlin’s disregard for international maritime law and civilian lives.
Sibiga also thanked Romania for its prompt rescue operation, its unwavering support for Ukraine, and its understanding that Russia’s actions pose a threat to the security of the entire Black Sea region.
The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Ukraine will continue to cooperate with Romania and other partners to strengthen security in the Black Sea.
“The response must be commensurate with the scale of the threat. Tighter sanctions. Increased pressure on Russia. Full accountability for every act of aggression. The aggressor must be forced to end its war,” Sibiga stated.
The Ukrainian foreign minister announced this on the social media platform X.
As a reminder, the President of Romania announced that a tanker had been struck off the country’s coast.
Ukraine provided Romania with a response regarding the explosion of a maritime drone in Constanta.
