Musician and soldier Yaroslav Varnak Ivanov was killed on the front lines

Yaroslav “Varnak” Ivanov, a soldier, musician, and songwriter who was only 23 years old, was killed in the war. He had served in various units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2022, combining his military service with his creative work, which became an important part of his life for both his comrades and his audience. The soldier was killed on May 31 while carrying out a combat mission.

Yaroslav Ivanov joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders in 2022, when the full-scale war was just beginning, and since then had served in several units, carrying out combat missions in the most challenging areas. He began his service in the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Kholodny Yar,” later continued in the Airborne Assault Forces, and in 2025 served in the electronic warfare company of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.

His friends and comrades recall that Yaroslav was not only a soldier but also a man who wrote constantly—music, lyrics, and prose—trying to make sense of the experience of war through creativity. “He wrote music and literature, prose. Yaroslav did not have time to publish some of his texts. In addition to rap tracks about his wartime experiences, which became hits among service members, Yaroslav wrote a draft of one prose book and was working on a second,” the “Unfinished” project reported.

His work was already circulating among soldiers during his lifetime, particularly his rap songs about the war, which resonated with his comrades and became a unique way to talk about what was happening on the front lines.

Yaroslav died on May 31 while carrying out a combat mission, leaving behind unfinished texts, music, and projects he did not have time to complete. This was reported by the “Unfinished” project.
