Russia is recruiting Indonesians to fight in the war against Ukraine
Russia continues to recruit foreigners to fight in the war against Ukraine. This time, Ukrainian intelligence reported the recruitment of Indonesian citizens—at least eight of whom have already been enlisted in the ranks of the Russian occupation army.
According to the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the agency has obtained documents on eight Indonesian citizens who were recruited to fight on Russia’s side in the war.
Intelligence officials note that Moscow is using a scheme that has already been tested in other countries. Potential recruits are promised substantial payments, non-combat roles, social benefits, and a simplified process for obtaining Russian citizenship. At the same time, after signing their contracts, these foreigners may find themselves directly on the front lines without proper training.
Similar cases have previously been documented among citizens of Nepal, Cuba, Kenya, and India. According to the SSU, some of the recruited foreigners were killed within the first few weeks of being on the front lines.
The Foreign Intelligence Service believes that enlisting citizens of other countries helps the Kremlin replenish personnel losses and compensate for the shortage of Russians willing to voluntarily sign military contracts.
In addition, Moscow can use the presence of foreigners in the Russian army for propaganda purposes, creating the impression of alleged international support for the war against Ukraine.
The Foreign Intelligence Service identified Indonesia as a new target for Russian recruitment and yet another “market for cheap labor” for the war.

Earlier, the German television channel ZDF published an investigation claiming that Russia had established a large-scale scheme to recruit foreigners to participate in the war against Ukraine.
Russia continues to recruit foreigners into its army to fight in the war against Ukraine. In particular, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the deaths of 11 Peruvian citizens who had joined Russian forces.
