Explosive objects may remain in the fields after shelling

Explosive objects may remain in the fields after shelling

Along with this year’s seasonal harvest in gardens and fields, there may be another dangerous “find”—cluster munitions and other explosive devices. They can be nearly invisible among the grass, soil, or plants and pose a deadly threat to people.

Experts urge people to be especially careful while working in backyard plots, gardens, and fields. If you spot a suspicious object, do not approach or touch it—back away along the same route and notify the appropriate authorities.

Following Russian shelling, cluster munitions, mines, and other explosive devices may remain in Ukrainian fields, vegetable gardens, and backyard plots. That is why this harvest season requires special caution. Experts emphasize that dangerous objects can be well-camouflaged. They are often hidden by grass, leaves, soil, or dense crops. Because of this, a person may not immediately notice the threat.

Cluster munitions pose a particular danger. They may not explode upon impact but remain dangerous for a long time afterward. Any careless touch or attempt to move such an object can lead to tragedy.

Rescue workers advise carefully surveying the area before starting work. It’s important to remember that even familiar vegetable gardens, orchards, or fields may have changed following hostilities. “Your garden and field have changed! Look for changes: long-familiar areas may hide traces of the enemy,” experts emphasize. If, while working, a person sees an object resembling a landmine, shell, or other munition, touching it is strictly prohibited. You must also not attempt to move, cover with soil, or defuse the dangerous object on your own. “If you see a mine—don’t touch it! Back away in the same footsteps!”—rescue workers urge.

Once a person has moved to a safe place, they must report the find by calling 101 or 102 and, if possible, warn others not to approach the dangerous area.

Experts remind the public that explosive devices can remain active for years. That is why staying alert and following simple safety rules will help prevent tragedies and save lives during routine work in the fields. This information is provided by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

As a reminder, “Ukroboronprom” made personnel decisions following the explosions at an ammunition depot in Vyshneve near Kyiv. The heads of two state-owned enterprises were dismissed for violating legal requirements and regulations on the safe storage of ammunition.

In Vyshneve, Kyiv Oblast, 253 private residential buildings were damaged as a result of a Russian attack. Nine people were killed in the strike. As of the evening of July 7, 18 victims were in medical facilities, where they are receiving the necessary care.

During the Russian attack on Vyshneve on the night of July 6, a dog named Yosya was locked inside a house engulfed in flames. His owners were certain he had perished, but the animal managed to escape the fire.
