In Zaporizhzhia, a Chechen occupier has been charged with torturing civilians
Law enforcement officials have charged a soldier from Chechnya, known by the nickname “Talib,” who, according to the investigation, participated in the torture of civilians in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. According to the National Police, the suspect was a member of one of the units of the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation and was involved in the brutal mistreatment of residents of the Berdiansk district. Investigators established that the occupier, along with other Russian military personnel, illegally detained and tortured civilians.
Law enforcement officials have documented yet another bloody war crime committed by Russian occupiers during the seizure of part of the Zaporizhzhia region. According to investigators, in the spring of 2022, Talib, along with other servicemen from the aggressor country, set up a temporary base at a captured stadium in the village of Osipenko in the Berdyansk district. The occupiers quickly turned the sports facility into an illegal prison for detaining and torturing pro-Ukrainian civilians.

In April 2022, heavily armed Russian soldiers led by Talib raided the private home of a local family. Threatening the owners with execution, they demanded that they hand over their weapons. When they did not get what they wanted, the invaders abducted the homeowner, tied him up, and took him to their torture chamber.
The abuse the Ukrainian man endured is shocking in its cruelty:
- The man was regularly and mercilessly beaten with a hammer on the head and back.
- They chained him to a hot metal pipe and threatened him with a painful death.
- They repeatedly simulated a firing squad, firing live rounds from automatic weapons right next to his head.

Under such hellish and inhumane conditions—without proper food, clean drinking water, any medical care, or basic sanitary conditions—the captive was illegally held for 43 days.
“During this time, the victim’s two minor sons were left without parental care under the control of the occupying forces. The children were also threatened with weapons and execution, causing them severe psychological suffering,” the National Police statement reads.
Based on the evidence gathered, the suspect has been notified of charges under the article regarding cruel treatment of the civilian population and other violations of the laws and customs of war as provided for by international treaties.
This was reported with reference to the Berdyansk District Police Department and the National Police of Ukraine.
