The power plant on which the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant depends has come under heavy fire — IAEA
On the morning of Thursday, June 4, the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant came under heavy fire from Russian occupation forces.
This attack poses yet another serious threat to the stable power supply of the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Experts from the IAEA’s Permanent Monitoring Mission, who are currently on site at the nuclear power plant, documented the aftermath of the strikes. They observed light smoke coming from the neighboring thermal power plant and clearly heard sounds of military activity.
According to available information, all personnel at the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant were forced to take emergency shelter.
This incident is causing serious concern among the international community due to the critical condition of the sole remaining backup power line at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Over the past few weeks, it has already failed several times due to ongoing hostilities.
As a result of this damage, the plant has had to rely entirely on emergency diesel generators to maintain power supply.
An autonomous power supply is vital for the uninterrupted cooling of the six reactors and for preventing a major nuclear accident.
As of now, the only operational power line remains connected to the power grid. However, the risk of its sudden disconnection due to ongoing shelling remains critically high.
This is reported by the IAEA.
