Polish citizen dies in Russian prison after traveling to Ukraine
A Polish citizen, Krzysztof Galos, who traveled to Ukraine in 2023, has died in a Russian pre-trial detention center.
This was reported by Gazeta Wyborcza.
According to journalists, the man, a resident of Kraków, likely ended up in a Russian prison, where he was allegedly tortured to death. The Russian historical association Memorial reported that Galos was held in the spring of 2023 in a pre-trial detention center in Taganrog, Rostov region. A Ukrainian source confirmed his death.
Krzysztof’s son said that during an Easter meeting in April 2023, his father spoke about a planned two-week vacation. A few days later, he sent his last SMS message: “I can’t reply. Everything is fine. I love you.” When the expected return date passed, the family reported him missing. Police established that on April 20, 2023, he crossed the Ukrainian border in his own car, carrying a bicycle. Later, the vehicle was recorded by a camera near a power plant in Zaporizhzhia region.
The victim’s niece noted that Galos had no connections to Ukraine and did not know anyone there. He denied the existence of the war and had suffered from depression for several years.
According to Memorial, the Pole “took a wrong turn and entered a military checkpoint of the Russian Federation.” Despite the fact that Russian authorities should have notified officials of his detention, the Polish government never received any official information about the arrest or death of Krzysztof Galos.
