The supply of air defense systems to Ukraine is critically important, says Zelenskyy
Following Russia’s massive combined attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense remains a top priority and a critically important task.
According to the head of state, on the night of July 2, Russian troops carried out one of their largest attacks, firing more than 70 missiles of various types, nearly half of which were ballistic missiles, as well as nearly 500 attack drones, including jet-powered “Shaheds.”
“In total, Russia fired more than 70 missiles of various types at Ukraine last night—nearly half of which were ballistic—and nearly 500 attack drones, including jet-powered ‘Shaheds.’ The main strike was directed specifically at Kyiv. Our air defenders managed to shoot down a significant number of these weapons, but not all of them.
The supply of air defense systems to Ukraine is an absolute priority and a critical issue. It is important that contributions be made to the PURL program: this is what directly helps save lives. Every bilateral agreement we have with our partners regarding air defense truly helps. I am grateful to all the leaders who are helping,” Zelenskyy stated.
The president also emphasized the importance of implementing agreements on the production of anti-ballistic systems.
“We are counting heavily on the United States’ decision regarding licenses for ‘Patriots’ and other joint efforts: this is what can stop the war and similar strikes. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine, with our people, and with our efforts to protect lives,” the head of state emphasized.
On the night of July 2, 2026, Russia launched a massive combined strike on Kyiv, using attack drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The air raid alert lasted several hours, and air defense forces continuously repelled the air attack.
According to the latest confirmed data, at least 13 people were killed and more than 80 were injured, including two children.
In addition, more than 20 residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged, and rescue operations continued at several locations, as people may still be trapped under the rubble.
The Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Pecherskyi, Podilskyi, and Obolonskyi districts of the capital suffered the most damage.
The strikes caused numerous fires, partially destroyed high-rise residential buildings, and damaged transportation infrastructure and utility networks. Public transportation routes in Kyiv were temporarily rerouted to address the aftermath of the attack.
The head of state announced this on Telegram.
