Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not take advantage of the opportunity to hold a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit, which is taking place in Evian-les-Bains, France.
According to the head of state, he proposed to French President Emmanuel Macron that a meeting with the Russian side be organized in a neutral country with the participation of G7 leaders. As Zelenskyy noted, Macron responded positively to the idea, but Russia did not respond to the proposal.
The president also said that the U.S. side had been informed of the initiative, but no positive response had been received from Moscow.
Zelenskyy emphasized that he had previously received offers through intermediaries to visit Moscow, but believes that any potential negotiations should take place on neutral territory. Among possible venues, he mentioned Switzerland, Turkey, countries in the Middle East, or the United States.
The head of state stressed the importance of organizing negotiations before winter sets in, noting that Ukraine seeks to avoid a repeat of the difficult winter period and continues to advocate for dialogue as the path to ending the war.
