Russia Has Stepped Up Recruitment of Relatives of Ukrainian Prisoners of War — SBU
The Security Service of Ukraine has noted an increase in attempts by Russian intelligence agencies to recruit Ukrainians whose relatives are being held captive in Russia.
According to the SBU, Russian officials are attempting to exploit the plight of relatives of prisoners of war to persuade them to cooperate. The security service urges citizens to be cautious and not to agree to carry out suspicious tasks.
In most documented cases, Russian intelligence officers or individuals under their control contact the affected families by phone, through messaging apps, via video calls, and sometimes in the presence of the prisoner of war themselves, the agency noted.
According to the SBU, relatives are often persuaded to disclose sensitive information, including:
the locations of military facilities and units;
routes of movement for equipment and personnel;
contact information and personal data of other military personnel, etc.
“Sometimes the enemy immediately assigns tasks involving sabotage, terrorist attacks, or contract killings, or involves them in information and psychological campaigns aimed at discrediting Ukraine.
In exchange for carrying out such tasks, the Russians allegedly promise to treat the captive with leniency and include them on ‘exchange lists.’ In reality, however, cooperating with the enemy has absolutely no effect on this.
In some cases, the perpetrators demand money from the victims, making baseless promises to secure the release of people from captivity,” the statement reads.
The SBU urges citizens not to agree to cooperate with the aggressors or the organizers of such fraudulent schemes.
“If you are approached for recruitment, immediately report it to the Security Service of Ukraine. If possible, record the conversation or correspondence,” the SBU added.

The SBU has warned of FSB schemes to recruit Ukrainians for terrorist attacks.
The Security Service of Ukraine announced the exposure and arrest of two FSB agents who, according to the investigation, were preparing a series of terrorist attacks in the Kharkiv region. One of their objectives was an attempt to carry out a mass killing of Ukrainian military personnel under the guise of a “charity” party.
In the Kyiv region, a court sentenced an FSB agent who had passed on the coordinates of air defense units protecting Kyiv to the occupying forces to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
