Russia has modernized the Kh-101 missiles four times for attacks on Ukraine

Russia has modernized the Kh-101 missiles four times for attacks on Ukraine

Russia has modified the design of the Kh-101 cruise missile at least four times since the start of the full-scale invasion in order to evade Ukrainian air defenses. These upgrades are aimed at increasing the missile’s destructive power and protecting it from interception during strikes on civilian and critical infrastructure.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

In the first phase, Russia increased the missile’s warhead from 500 kg to 800 kg by reducing the fuel load. Subsequently, the weapon was equipped with cluster warheads containing incendiary mixtures designed to cause large-scale fires over extensive areas. The third phase of the upgrade involved a terrain-mapping guidance system to enable more precise targeting in the presence of electronic warfare systems.

The latest changes include the installation of electronic countermeasure systems and automatic heat decoys to deceive Ukrainian radars and interceptor missiles. The Defense Ministry emphasizes that these measures are a forced response by the enemy to the effectiveness of the air defense system, which has destroyed approximately 88% of Kh-101 and Kh-55 missiles since the beginning of 2026. At the same time, analysis of the debris indicates that Russia lacks large stockpiles, as the missiles are often assembled immediately before launch.

In parallel with the modernization of missiles, the Russian Federation is experiencing wear and tear on its Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers, leading to a reduction in the number of combat-ready delivery systems. Despite the enemy’s attempts to upgrade its weapons, the Ukrainian military continues to successfully detect and destroy the upgraded models of equipment. The defenders’ top priority remains achieving a 95% interception rate to ensure the complete safety of civilian cities.

The European Union must ramp up missile production to the point where it eventually surpasses Russia and creates a real deterrent against potential aggression, said European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius during a visit to Bourges, France. According to him, Europe’s current pace is insufficient, and the continent is already lagging behind Russia in military production in certain segments.

Additionally, a critical failure in the Starlink system temporarily left U.S. naval drones without communication or control, causing some of the equipment to effectively “hang” in the ocean during testing.

Slovakia received its first battery of the Israeli Barak MX air defense system.
