Russia announced new strikes against Ukraine following a proposal for a ceasefire
On the morning of September 5, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced new strikes against Ukraine. This announcement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed a ceasefire in the air during the visit of representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
In an evening address on September 4, Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the upcoming visits by the U.S. representatives to Russia and Ukraine.
According to the president, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will visit Moscow and are scheduled to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared to refrain from conducting airstrikes during the U.S. visit and expects Russia to take a similar step.
“Just as we did during previous diplomatic visits by the American side, we will ensure the normal functioning of Russian airspace so that the negotiators can arrive safely. We are concerned specifically for them, not for Russia. There will be no airstrikes on our part, and Russia must reciprocate by ensuring a ceasefire—no airstrikes—for the time needed to conduct these talks and resolve logistical issues related to this U.S. visit,” Zelenskyy said.
Despite the Ukrainian president’s proposal for an air ceasefire, on the morning of September 5, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a new attack on Ukraine.
The Russian ministry claimed that a coordinated strike had been carried out overnight using ground-based high-precision weapons and long-range strike drones.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the targets were allegedly facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Mykolaiv, and the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.
Thus, Russia’s announcement of new strikes came the very next morning after Zelenskyy’s proposal for a mutual moratorium on airstrikes while the U.S. delegation was in the region.
The visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv is scheduled to take place in the coming days and is related to negotiations on ending the war.
On Wednesday, a Russian attack destroyed a warehouse containing Philips-branded household goods and caused significant damage to the warehouse infrastructure of the company’s logistics partner in Ukraine.
On the night of September 5, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine, using “Iskander-M/KN-23” ballistic missiles and 167 attack drones.
Russian occupiers attacked the “Epicenter” shopping mall in Mykolaiv several times. Two people were injured as a result of the strikes, and fires broke out at the impact sites.
In Kyiv, Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had proposed to Russia—the aggressor state—that it temporarily halt airstrikes for the duration of negotiations related to possible visits by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
In the U.S., President Donald Trump stated that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling abroad to try to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia—the aggressor state.
