Ukraine struck an airfield and an oil refinery in Russia
On the night of September 6, the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked the Russian military airfield in Rostov-on-Don. A fire broke out there following the strike, and in the Rostov region, the “Podlyot” radar station and two “Pantsir-S1” systems were also hit. In addition, the Ryazan Oil Refinery was struck again, where a fire also broke out.
On the night of September 6, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out strikes on several key military and energy facilities on Russian territory. One of the main targets was the Russian military airfield in Rostov-on-Don. The Ukrainian military confirmed that it had been hit. A fire broke out at the airfield following the strike. In the Rostov region, “Podlyot” and “Pantsir” systems were struck
In addition to the airfield, the Defense Forces carried out strikes against Russian air defense systems and radar infrastructure. According to the General Staff, the “Podlyot” radar station and two “Pantsir-S1” anti-aircraft missile and gun systems were struck in the Rostov region.
The “Podlyot” radar is used to detect air targets and transmit information to air defense systems. The “Pantsir-S1” is designed to protect critical facilities from air attacks. Therefore, the destruction of such systems could weaken Russian air defense in the area where they were deployed. At the same time, the General Staff has not yet reported on the exact nature of the damage to these facilities.
Ryazan Oil Refinery Under Attack Again
Another target was the Ryazan Oil Refinery in the Ryazan Region. The General Staff confirmed that the facility came under attack again. A fire broke out on the refinery’s grounds following the attack. The Ryazan Oil Refinery is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. The refinery is owned by Rosneft and produces various types of petroleum products.
The facility is also important to the Russian military, as its products are used to meet the needs of the Russian armed forces. According to Rosneft, the Ryazan Oil Refinery ranks among the top five Russian oil refineries in terms of processing volume and product range.
Which units may have been damaged
The Ukrainian company Fire Point issued a separate statement regarding the consequences of the attack. According to its data, Ukrainian drones struck the largest primary oil refining units at the Ryazan Refinery. The company claims that these units account for more than 77% of the facility’s crude oil processing capacity.
If this information is confirmed, the damage could significantly impact the refinery’s operations. Primary refining is one of the key stages in a refinery’s operations, as it is during this stage that crude oil is converted into semi-finished products, which are then used to produce gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum products. However, the exact extent of the damage to the Ryazan refinery has not yet been officially disclosed. It is also unknown how long it may take Russia to restore the affected facilities.
Why Strikes on Oil Refineries Are Important
This is not the first time the Ryazan Oil Refinery has been targeted by Ukrainian attacks. Strikes on Russian oil refineries have several immediate consequences. They can reduce fuel production volumes, place an additional burden on other Russian refineries, and complicate the supply of fuel to the military.
Large primary refining units are particularly important. Damage to them can affect not just a single production segment, but a significant portion of the entire facility’s operations. That is why Fire Point’s information on damage to the largest units may be crucial for assessing the attack’s consequences. At the same time, the final extent of the damage has yet to be determined.
Ukraine continues to strike at Russia’s military and energy infrastructure
In a nighttime attack, Ukrainian forces simultaneously struck targets of various types. A fire broke out at the Rostov-on-Don airfield following the strike. Russian detection and air defense systems—the “Podlyot” radar and two “Pantsir-S1” systems—were also struck in the Rostov region.
Separately, the Ryazan Oil Refinery, a key facility in Russia’s oil refining industry, was struck. Thus, last night, Ukrainian forces attacked several components of the Russian military system at once—ranging from airfield and air defense infrastructure to a facility that produces petroleum products. The exact results of the strikes on each of the targets are currently being determined. This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in its morning briefing.
Russian troops struck a residential building in Kherson with a guided aerial bomb. Three people were injured in the attack—an 84-year-old man, a 75-year-old woman, and a 43-year-old man. All were taken to the hospital.
Russian drones caused major fires in the Synelnykivskyi district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. A food warehouse and a logistics company building caught fire, and rescue workers had to work on site all night. The fire was extinguished.
Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops engaged in combat with the Ukrainian Defense Forces 245 times. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Pokrovsk direction—43; another 17 assaults took place in the Kostiantynivka direction, and nine each in the Pivdenno-Slobozhansky and Kupiansky directions.
Over the past day, the Russian army lost another 1,390 soldiers in the war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian General Staff also reports the destruction of three multiple-launch rocket systems, one air defense system, and more than 1,400 drones.
