Russia attacked the DTEK thermal power plant and shut it down
Russian troops have attacked one of DTEK’s thermal power plants several times. As a result of the shelling, the plant stopped generating electricity, and its equipment sustained serious damage. The company says this is the more than 230th attack on its thermal power plants since the start of the full-scale war.
The Russian military carried out several waves of attacks on one of DTEK’s thermal power plants. As a result of the strikes, the plant was forced to completely halt electricity generation. The company reported that the Russian attack caused significant damage to the equipment. “Russia carried out several waves of attacks on one of DTEK’s thermal power plants. The plant has stopped generating electricity. The equipment has been significantly damaged,” DTEK reported.
The company did not specify which plant was attacked. Damage to an energy facility means a loss of part of its generating capacity. This is particularly critical for the Ukrainian power grid amid ongoing Russian strikes against the energy sector.
DTEK’s thermal power plants have been attacked more than 230 times
DTEK notes that Russian troops have been systematically attacking its thermal power plants since the start of the full-scale invasion. In total, there have been more than 230 such attacks.
This is not a single isolated shelling incident, but rather a sustained campaign of strikes against thermal power generation. As a result, power plant workers are forced to regularly repair damaged equipment and restore the plants to operation. Some facilities have been successfully restored after attacks, but repeated strikes are once again damaging the equipment that has already been repaired.
Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy sector
Thermal power plants remain among the key facilities in the Ukrainian power grid. They generate electricity and help maintain the stability of the grid, especially when the load on it increases. Therefore, every serious attack on a thermal power plant means the loss of a portion of available generation capacity.
Russian strikes on the energy sector also place an additional burden on other power plants and grids. Energy workers must balance the system while simultaneously repairing damaged facilities. DTEK has repeatedly emphasized that energy workers continue to restore power plants following Russian attacks. However, repeated strikes make this process significantly more difficult.
Currently, the power plant that was the target of the latest attack is not generating electricity. Its future operation will depend on the extent of the damage and the ability to carry out the necessary repairs. DTEK Group reported this on Telegram.
