Russia wants to change the format of talks with the U.S. on the war in Ukraine — NYT
Moscow is calling for a shift to a new format for negotiations with the U.S. regarding the war in Ukraine and other international issues, moving away from the practice of periodic contacts through special envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump.
This is reported by The New York Times.
According to the publication, the Russian side is no longer satisfied with the sporadic visits by White House special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and is seeking to establish a permanent diplomatic mechanism with working groups and regular meetings. The Kremlin also wants Washington to appoint a new U.S. ambassador to Russia.
As the NYT notes, Moscow believes that a more systematic approach is needed to discuss complex international issues, rather than one-off negotiating missions.
Richard Fontaine, executive director of the Center for a New American Security, emphasized that foreign policy is a long and complex process that requires consistent effort.
At the same time, he noted that Donald Trump often relies on quick solutions to complex international problems and prefers high-profile diplomatic gestures and public agreements.
Trump himself has previously acknowledged that he underestimated the complexity of the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to him, there were moments when he reached agreements with Putin but did not receive support from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and later the situation reversed.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin made yet another cynical statement, claiming that the full-scale war in Ukraine is allegedly nearing its end.
Putin has authorized the army to invade other countries to free Russians who have been imprisoned there.
