Russia has changed its tactics for drone attacks in the Kherson region
Russian troops have begun employing a new tactic involving the use of attack drones during attacks on the Kherson region. According to Ukrainian military officials, the drones accelerate to high speeds before reaching the front line and then dive sharply downward, making them difficult to intercept.
This was reported by the “Crimea.Realities” project, citing Ukrainian military personnel. According to the soldiers, after crossing the front line, Russian attack drones accelerate to approximately 170 km/h and dive toward their target. Due to their high speed, it becomes significantly more difficult for Ukrainian units to catch up with and destroy such UAVs.
At the same time, soldiers from the 34th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces note that this tactic does not ensure high strike accuracy for the Russians. According to them, the drones often miss their intended targets and inflict indiscriminate strikes on civilian infrastructure.
“The speed is very high. As soon as it approaches our line of contact, they go all out, open the throttle, and dive in, nosediving like a corkscrew. We can’t catch up to them, and they can’t hit their targets. Their success rate is 50-50,” said a soldier with the call sign “Skipper.”
According to military sources, the intensity of drone attacks has also increased significantly recently. Whereas the Kherson Regional Military Administration previously recorded up to 400 drone strikes per day on the city and the region, that number has now increased to approximately 800, according to sources interviewed by “Krym.Realii.”
In addition, Russian troops are increasingly using fiber-optic-controlled drones. Such drones can penetrate dozens of kilometers deep into the territory, are immune to electronic warfare measures, and cannot be detected by standard sensors.
A soldier with the call sign “Gopri” explained that operators deliberately narrow the drone’s camera field of view, causing the drone to effectively fly “blind.” According to him, this further reduces the accuracy of strikes and increases the risk of hitting civilian targets.
Ukrainian military officials emphasize that the new tactics of Russian drones indicate a continuation of the terror against the civilian population, as the drones’ low accuracy often causes them to crash into residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.
