Instead of Kyiv, Russian General Lapin received life imprisonment in three days
A Ukrainian court has sentenced Russian Armed Forces Colonel General Alexander Lapin to life in prison. Lapin led the attempt to seize Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions at the start of the full-scale invasion. The ruling was a response to Russia’s war crimes and aggression against Ukraine.
Prosecutors proved that in February–March 2022, this general was not merely a nominal commander on paper. He directly organized the invasion, planned and coordinated the actions of subordinate units, issued orders, and ensured the continuation of hostilities against Ukraine.
“It was under his command that Russian troops occupied settlements in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions and advanced toward Kyiv along the left bank of the Dnipro River. Their goal was to capture the Ukrainian capital, government institutions, and military command structures, and to establish occupation control,” the Prosecutor General’s Office stated.
The court found the Russian war criminal guilty under two serious articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Encroachment upon the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine.
- Planning, preparing, initiating, and waging an aggressive war.
Since Alexander Lapin is currently in hiding from justice on the territory of the Russian Federation, the court’s verdict was handed down in absentia. The general’s life sentence will begin upon his actual arrest.
Alexander Lapin is the former commander of Russia’s Central Military District. He led the Russian military group “Center” and directly commanded the offensive from the territories of Belarus and Russia toward the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions.
After retreating from the north, his units took part in the battles for Lysychansk and Severodonetsk. For this, Vladimir Putin awarded him the title of “Hero of Russia.”
