A Rosatom container ship sank in the Black Sea following an attack by maritime drones
The container ship "Yanina," owned by the Russian company Fesco—which is part of Rosatom—sank in the Black Sea. The Russian side claims that the vessel was attacked by two maritime drones on the night of August 1.
According to them, the container ship sank approximately 130 nautical miles from Novorossiysk.
All 17 crew members were reportedly rescued.
The Russian side states that the ship was carrying exclusively civilian cargo.
“It was an ordinary, peaceful container ship traveling in international waters and carrying civilian goods—ranging from frozen foods to construction and finishing materials. Such an attack cannot be interpreted as anything other than piracy and maritime robbery,” Likhachev said.
According to the Russian publication Astra, the container ship “FESCO Yanina” joined the Fesco fleet in September 2021. The vessel is 142 meters long, 22 meters wide, has a deadweight of 13,007 metric tons, and a container capacity of 962 TEU.
There is currently no independent confirmation of the circumstances of the incident. The Ukrainian side has not officially commented on the claims regarding the attack and the sinking of the vessel.
This was reported by Russian media, citing a statement by Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev.
As a reminder, a dry cargo ship carrying wheat sank in the Sea of Azov off the coast of the Kherson region on April 5, 2026.
