A Russian informant who was passing on the coordinates of Ukrainian Armed Forces positions was exposed in Poltava

The Military Counterintelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine has exposed a Russian informant in Poltava who was passing on the coordinates of Ukrainian Defense Forces to the occupiers. According to the investigation, he tracked the positions of Ukrainian troops, which the enemy used to plan missile and drone attacks. It is noted that the strikes were directed by a local unemployed man who agreed to cooperate with the Russian side while looking for “easy money” on Telegram channels.

In exchange for the promised reward, the perpetrator took taxis to identify the bases of Ukrainian troops and mark their locations on Google Maps.

“The Russians were most interested in the combat positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ anti-aircraft missile systems and radar stations, which the Russian Federation was targeting for a new series of shelling. Additionally, it has been documented that the informant photographed administrative buildings and service parking lots of local National Police units. Upon identifying potential targets, he immediately informed Russian intelligence officers of the Defense Forces’ deployment locations via photo and video files geotagged with electronic coordinates,” the statement reads.

Security Service officers uncovered the suspect’s intelligence activities in advance, documented them, and secured the locations of Ukrainian defenders. In the final stage of preventive measures, SBU military counterintelligence officers detained the enemy spotter.

“During searches, a phone containing ‘reports’ to the Russian Federation was seized from the detainee. Photographic and computer forensic examinations conducted by the SBU confirmed the suspect’s criminal acts in the interests of the aggressor country. Security Service investigators informed him that he is suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized dissemination of information regarding the movement or deployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations established in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, committed under martial law),” the SBU added.

The suspect faces up to eight years in prison.
