In Russia, migrants are prohibited from marrying Russian women aged 80 or older

Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the Russian State Duma, announced the end of a scheme to obtain Russian citizenship through sham marriages with elderly women. 

According to him, foreigners often entered into marriages with Russian women aged 80 or older, but such “loopholes” in the law have now been closed.

The Russian authorities are prioritizing domestic political stability and are implementing stricter, comprehensive control over migrants in the country. In this way, the Kremlin is attempting to appease excessively xenophobic ultra-nationalists.

In Russia, there has been a significant increase in raids at fitness centers and sports clubs aimed at identifying conscripts and migrant workers.
