Ukraine Is Turning Marine Drones Into Mini-Aircraft Carriers – NYT

Ukraine is actively modernizing its maritime drones, transforming them into multifunctional platforms for launching aerial drones and intercepting targets, which is generating significant interest among military experts and defense companies around the world.

According to The New York Times, the Ukrainian military is combining naval and aerial systems to overcome the enemy’s layered defenses. In particular, during preparations for attacks on Russian ports in Tuapse and Novorossiysk, aerial drones launched from naval vessels destroyed radars on Russian oil platforms, clearing the way for strike drones. In addition, naval platforms have already been successfully used to launch air defense systems against enemy “Shahed” drones.

Thanks to the high effectiveness and relatively low cost of Ukrainian developments, domestic companies are actively expanding their international cooperation. In particular, drone manufacturers Magura and Sargan are already negotiating joint projects with the U.S. and Norway, while partners from the Baltic states, the Persian Gulf, and Japan are expressing interest in acquiring the technology and localizing the production of such vessels.

A Ukrainian Sargan-3000 unmanned surface vehicle destroyed a Russian kamikaze drone in the Black Sea. The interception took place on September 12 after representatives of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate detected a Russian unmanned surface vehicle and directed a drone from the Ukrainian Navy toward it.

The Ukrainian Navy reported the destruction of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) border patrol vessel “Izumrud” near Novorossiysk. According to military officials, the strike on the vessel was carried out using the Sargan-3000 system.
