Ukraine has called on countries and international organizations to respond decisively to Russia’s attack on civilian vessels in the Black Sea.
According to the foreign minister, Russia attacked a dry cargo ship owned by a Turkish company overnight, immediately following a visit to Russia by a Turkish government delegation.
“This is a clear demonstration that Russia’s words cannot be trusted. Russia remains the main threat to the security and prosperity of the Black Sea,” Sibiga emphasized.
The minister reported that one crew member—an Egyptian citizen—was killed during the incident; the ship’s crew (Turkish and Indian citizens) was rescued by the Ukrainian Navy, and that two other vessels flying the flags of Palau and Belize sustained damage, but there were no casualties.
Sibiga stressed that Ukraine is informing international bodies about the attack as a violation of international law and freedom of navigation.
“It requires a decisive and principled response from the international community and the International Maritime Organization,” he stressed.
