Ukrainian IFVs have been equipped with the Spanish Guardian 30 combat module

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have begun using modernized BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles equipped with the Spanish-made Guardian 30 remotely operated combat module. The appearance of this equipment became known after the publication of a photo by the 146th Separate Repair and Restoration Regiment, where the upgraded vehicle was first spotted.

In fact, this is the first public image of such a modernization, although the possible delivery of these modules to Ukraine was discussed as early as 2025.

According to open sources, plans to supply Guardian 30 combat modules to Ukraine were reported in May 2025. After that, there was virtually no official information about their use, and the appearance of the photo became the first confirmation that the equipment may have already reached the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The post accompanying the photos noted that the equipment is undergoing the necessary preparation processes and may be heading either from the factory or to the area of operation. This means that at this stage, it is more a matter of implementation than of large-scale combat use.

The Spanish Guardian 30 combat module was developed by Escribano Mechanical and Engineering. It can be equipped with a 30-mm Mk 44 Bushmaster II automatic cannon, as well as additional weapon systems, including Spike anti-tank missiles. In its base version, the module features modern digital architecture, stabilization, and a fire control system, as well as panoramic sights that enhance the crew’s accuracy and operational speed.

At the same time, the Ukrainian version, according to preliminary estimates, may differ from the standard configuration. It is likely that some of the weapons or modules were replaced or not installed due to technical and logistical constraints. The modernization of Soviet IFVs in Ukraine has been ongoing for many years. Various combat modules—Parus, Shkval, Stilet, and Spis—have been installed on these vehicles. Some of them underwent testing, after which production models appeared, including the BMP-1TS.

The Guardian 30 has become one of the most advanced variants in this series, as it features more modern electronics and a guidance system that provides the crew with better situational awareness. The original version of the module is designed to use the 30mm Mk 44 Bushmaster II cannon. There are also options to mount a 40mm cannon or the Soviet 2A42, which is used on the BMP-2.

Separately, the Spike anti-tank missile system can be integrated into the complex. However, in the case of the Ukrainian version, there is currently no confirmed information regarding the specific type of anti-tank missile system or cannon installed on the revealed vehicle. The appearance of such IFVs indicates the gradual integration of Western solutions into Soviet-era equipment, which is still widely used on the front lines. This allows for increased effectiveness without a complete replacement of the armored vehicle fleet.

At the same time, experts emphasize that final conclusions about the Guardian 30’s capabilities in Ukraine can only be drawn after confirmed combat use or the release of more detailed technical data. This is reported by DEFENSE EXPRESS.
