No one left to bury the dead in occupied Oleshky
The situation regarding the burial of those killed and deceased in temporarily occupied Oleshky in the Kherson region has reached a critical point.
This was reported to Ukrinform by the head of the Oleshky City Military Administration, Tetiana Hasanenko.
Due to the actions of the occupiers, the city effectively lacks a functioning funeral services system, and bodies remain unburied for months.
The occupation administration requires forensic examinations to be carried out in the distant towns of Kalanchak or Skadovsk, creating insurmountable logistical and financial obstacles.
“Those who are killed — whether blown up or dying under shelling — and those who die naturally, there is no one to bury them. They must be taken to Kalanchak or Skadovsk for a medical examination, then the body must be collected and buried,” Hasanenko said in an interview with Ukrinform.
She stressed that residents do not have the necessary funds, which results in bodies remaining in homes or on the streets for extended periods.
A particularly shocking case has emerged in which the body of a man who died in December was taken for examination only two months later.
Currently, the deceased are often buried in ordinary polyethylene bags, with the site marked only by a simple plaque bearing a name and dates.
Bodies that are recovered and transported are taken to the local morgue, damaged by shelling, where they are stored in inadequate conditions.
“And it is fortunate if someone finds a body and agrees to bring it and leave it at that morgue. It is winter now, it is cold, so the bodies are preserved somehow. But in the spring — what will happen, and who will remove the corpses from that morgue and bury them?” Hasanenko noted, expressing concern about the future sanitary situation.
It was previously reported that occupiers in the Luhansk region are massively seizing housing from lawful owners.
It was also reported that the temporarily occupied territories are becoming a reserve base for the Russian army.
